The
flute is the fried of those who is separated from his beloved
پردا ہایش پردہ ہائے مادریت

حریف is
used for people of doing same business and they can be friends as well as
enemies. Here, it is used for friends and this couplet is linked with the
following one came above (Book 1/ Couplet 7):
لیک چشم و گوش را
آں نور نیست
The meaning is that Ne i.e. Rooh has congeniality and
comparability with those people who have tasted the separation or severance
with their beloved and he can understand the truth of pain and sorrow.
Now Maulana Rumi (RA) states to his condition that we are also under the
influence of separation and this crying has an effect on us to remove the veils
of lethargy and laziness and become involved in desire of the beloved. The hole
in flute, from where the sound emanates, is called پردہ
and it is used here as fire figuratively.
[When
a carpenter picks up a bamboo stick and after properly drying it up, he clears
the inner hindrances. Thereafter he makes holes (پردہ)
in it and then the flute starts crying up. Similarly, when a perfect teacher
(sheikh) clears the inner hindrances (باطنی)
of a seeker, the person concerned starts crying up.]
