Mathnavi Rumi was written by Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi(1207-1273), a famous
sufi saint. He is also popularly known as Maulana Rum. The Mathnavi is written
in Persian language and it contains around 25000 couplets, making it one of the
biggest spiritual books. The Mathnavi is in six books and has a unique style of
conveying message through stories and anecdotes. The Mathnavi contains
references from Quran and Hadith explaining Islamic wisdom (hikmah).
Mathnavi is one of the most read book in the world and it is also widely translated eg. By Nicholson, Arberry, Whinfield etc. Qari Sajjad Hussain Sahab did urdu translation, which is very popular in Indian sub-continent. Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi, an Indian scholar (1863 – 1943) has written a detailed Urdu commentary of Mathnavi, titled Kaleed –e- Mathnavi (Keys to Mathnavi), in 24 volumes.

In the present attempt, we strive to explain this monumental work on Islamic spirituality in simple English for easy accessibility to
non-Urdu/ Persian knowing people. In order to make meaning more clear, a simple literal
translation has been provided under the Persian couplets, so that the reader
can lucidly connect with the commentary that followed. I hope this effort would
be of help for those who are striving to understand the esoteric knowledge
contained in Mathnavi and a number of English knowing people may be benefited
At last I seek your blessings for furthering this effort.
