عشقہائے کز پئے
رنگے بود
The love
(ishq) which is merely for beauty
عشق نبود عاقبت
ننگے بُود
Is not a ishq, the result would be shame and defame
This
is in the words of Maulana Rum. Earlier it is was described how the love of the
girl declined when the beauty and complexion of the goldsmith deteriorated. Now
Maulana states this universal convention that the ishq which is based on the
color and beauty, that is actually not an ishq at all, but a shame only. The
benefits of the ishq is not available in this kind of ishq, instead the end of
this would be unsatisfaction and defame. When the reality of this is opened
leaving regret only and thinking that where in the shame was I be involved. One
should not be in doubt that in an
earlier couplet (couplet 145):
عاشقی گرزیںسر و گرزاں سرست
عاقبت مارا بداں شہ رہبرست
It
is said that carnal ishq can be changed to Real Ishq and here it is opposite to
that. The answer is that the applicability of this is under the conditions
mentioned in the explanation of that couplet and in that couplet, the limits
have also been mentioned. The ishq containing blameworthy and desirous of
carnal pleasure, as has been described here, would lead to unsatisfaction and
defame only, if it is not meeting the conditions mentioned there.
