Couplet 494-495


رفتہ در صحراء بے چوں کانِ شاں

Their soul goes to a unique desolated place



روحِ شاں آسودہ اَبدانِ شاں


These are free from greed, inclination and troubles


فارغاں از حرص و اِکباب  و حصص

They are free from greed, inclination & troubles



مرغ وارا ز دام جَستہ و ز قصص


Like a bird who frees from a trap or cage



The indication is towards a previous Couplet 486:
ہر شبے از دامِ تن ارواح را
می رہانی می کنی اَلواح را

Meaning that the their spirits (ارواح) go to the field of calmness (عالیمِ مثال/ عالیمِ برزخ) and both spirits and body become calm and composed there. The attributes of worry & anxiety is of spirits and the attributes of fatigue & labour is of the body and all these become cut off in that world. They become free of worries of their rights and their shares etc. like a bird, which flies at once when  becomes free of the trap or cage.

عالیمِ مثال is a world in between this world (عالیمِ شہادت) and عالیمِ غیب (extra sensory world). This is also known as World of Barzakh (عالیمِ برزخ). Both Quran & hadith and from the explanation of people getting inspiration (اہلِ کشف), the existence of this world is proven. One has to live here after the death till the happening of hereafter (قیامہ), and it is what is being revealed in the dreams. It is known from the writings of some saints that this world has limits but it’s not a materialistic world. Thus with respect to limits, it is similar to this world and with respect to materialism, it is similar to عالیمِ ارواح. As this world has both limits and is a materialistic, whereas عالیمِ ارواح does not have both limits and materialism. This عالیمِ برزخ has one attributes each similar with each of these two extreme worlds.

Couplet 493


شمّہ زیں حالِ عارف دانمود

Some part of raptures of Gnostics has been opened by Allah



خلق را ہم خوابِ حِسّی در ربود


So that even normal sleep makes people absorbed



The examples of Gnostics and the detail of ‘Allah captures the rooh at the time of death’
                   Allah Ta’ala wants to get common people acquainted of the condition, absorption, business and unawareness of the Gnostics, so that they may also strive to achieve their condition. In order to do so, Allah Ta’ala appoints the dream as an example for common people to guess.


Couplet 490-492


حالِ عارف ایں بُود  بیخواب ہم

This would be the condition of those are with Allah



  گفت یزداں    ہُم رُقُوْدُ    زیں مرم


Allah says “they are sleeping”. Don’t move away


خفتہ از احوالِ دنیا روز و شب

He is oblivious, day & night, of the conditions of this world

چوں قلم در پنجہ تقلیبِ رب

They are like pen in the hands of Allah



آنکہ اُو پنجہ نہ بیند در رقم

One who does not see the movement of hand while writing

فعل پندارد بہ جنبش از قلم

He considers the movement of pen is His doing



              The condition of other people while sleeping,  when they become disconnected and cut off from the worldly affairs, the Gnostics (عارفین) of Allah Ta’ala experience the similar conditions like that of dream while awaken i.e. they are free from the carnal desires and disconnected from it. Allah Ta’ala states in Quran regarding the conditions of People of Cave (اصحاب الکہف) –

And you would think them awake, while they were asleep.

                       O’ reader, you are thinking them as awaken, because they have their eyes opened, although they are in sound sleep. It does not mean that this Ayaah explains the disconnection and cutting off of Gnostics from the world, but rather the conditions of Gnostics are similar to the story that has been mentioned in this Ayaah. One should understand that the aim is the similarity and not the explanation. Further don’t averse from the contents mentioned i.e. don’t reject our declaration that the Gnostics are in such a state. While explaining this similarity, Maulana states that they are usually away and unaware of the conditions of the world (دنیا) all the time. It does not mean that they are not in senses but it is a kind of absorption , which does not have the aim of getting  perfection (کمال) nor the eternity and nor the same is common for all the Gnostics. Rather the objective is that these saints do not incline to the acts, which are making veil towards Allah or acts/ speeches that make them distracted from Allah. They also do not commit any act which is not desirable to Allah Ta’ala. The explanation of the above is in the second part of the couplet that they are such an obedient servant of Allah Ta’ala like the pen in the hand of the writer, who moves it wherever he likes.

                    Maulana states that they do not consider their action as an effect from them but witnessing the reason from Allah Ta’ala. They consider themselves as pen in the wrist of writer holding the pen. Though this direction is common for all, due to being uncontrolled action, as all are in the state of pen in the wrist of writer. But as the others are looking for the effects i.e. external & worldly things and whereas, these saints are looking for the cause of Allah Ta’ala, therefore, they have been specifically mentioned due to their knowledge (علم) and معرفہ. Further he states the status of common people that whosoever does not see the wrist, he would understand the movement as the effect of pen’s action i.e. the external causes. Likewise, the common people, in the matters relating to their authority, do not consider themselves under the commands of Allah Ta’ala and instead made their own opinion. Further in the matters which are not under their own authority, they are  oblivious the cause as being Allah Ta’ala.

Couplet 486-489


ہر شبے از دامِ تن ارواح را

The souls are being freed every night from the body



می رہانی می کنی اَلواح را


By You and the plates are uprooted


می رہند ارواح  ہر شب زیں قَفَس

Souls are freed from this cage (body) every night



فارغاں بے حاکم و محکومِ کس


Free from being governed a or governing


شب ز زنداں بے خبر زندانیاں

The way prisoners are unaware of the prison in the night



شب ز دولت بےخبر سلطانیاں


And officials are unaware of the affairs of the kingdom


نے غم و اندیشہ سود و زماں

Nobody is anxious or perturbed of benefit & loss

نے خیال ایں فلاں و آں فلاں

Neither of taking care of this or that one




                        In the previous Couplet 485
گر ہزاراں دام باشد ہر قدم
چوں تو بامائی نباشد ہیچ غم
                    It is said that we could be free from the traps of nafs and satan, if You wish so. The way You allow the spirits (ارواح) to leave the human body on each night. It seems that the doors and walls of the prison (body) are uprooted to allow the spirits to become free. Thus the spirits are  become free every night and become free of any botherations i.e. no worry to rule someone or being ruled by someone nor the prisoners are worrying about the prisons nor the rulers are worrying about their wealth  nor the worry of profit or loss nor thoughts of anyone. Thus the way the spirits are being allowed to move out on daily basis from such a big prison, as they become free of any worries, similarly it is in Your hand to make us free of spiritual (باطنی) calamities.

Couplet 484-485


چوں عنایاتت شود با ما مقیم

When Your blessings will be with us,



کے بود بیمے ازاں دُزدِ لئیم


Then where is the fear of that wicked thief


گر ہزاراں دام باشد ہر قدم

Even if there are thousands of traps on the path



چوں تو بامائی نباشد ہیچ غم


Nothing to worry, if You are with us


                      Allah Ta’ala has been requested in these couplets i.e. although the traps of nafs and satan are dangerous but with Your eternal favours, which is bestowing on us, we are safe from these traps. Even if there are thousands of traps in each step, but we do not bother them if You are with us.

                     Here is an indication for the seekers (سالک) not to be reliant on his معرفہ or struggles, but do entreat from Allah Ta’ala continuously and keep faith on the His sight and bounty. As Sheikh Sa’adi says:

تکیہ بر تقویٰ و دانش در طریقت کافرست


راہرو گر صد ہنر وارد توکل بایدش

Couplet 481-483


بس ستارہ آتش از آہن جہید

Sparks of fire are coming out from iron



ویں دلِ شوریدہ پذ رفت و کشید



And the heart in love have accepted them & absorbed


لیک در ظلمت یکے دزدِ نہاں

But a thief, hidden in the dark
مے نہد انگشت بر استارگاہ

Extinguishes these sparks



میکشد استار گانرا یک بیک

It extinguishes spark immediately

تا کہ نفر و زد چراغے بر فلک

So that no lamp could light up in the sky




                     There is an example in these couplets to show how the nafs and satan make the good deeds of a person waste and the story of desire mentioned here is covered in the opening of the sixth part of this delectable book. In that story, a thief entered someone’s house in the night, The person brought a stone, in order to ascertain who is there, and putting it on a cotton or clothe or something of this kind for lighting. The thief, in the meantime, came closure to him and sat near him and the person could not see him due to darkness. When the person rubbed the stone, spark produced but the thief put his finger on it and put it off. Similarly sparks had been produced and he continuously put them off in a similar manner. The gist of the story is that the light could not take place so that he could save his property and grab the thief. Likewise, the prayers & good deeds are being performed by different parts of the body  and some noor and blessings do take place in the heart. But the nafs and satan started erasing these good deeds through creating bad attributes like ostentation and pride etc. Thus noor could not be accumulated in the heart and like the story, we could not be able to know the fact i.e. its cause due to the darkness of ignorance.

Couplet 477-480


اوّل ایجاں دفعِ شرّ موش کن

O’ dear! Get rid of mischief of mouse first



وانگہ اندر جمعِ گندم جوش کن


Then try to hoard wheat


بشنو از اَخبارِ آں صَدْرُ الصُّدور

Listen to the Hadith of head of heads



لَا صَلٰوۃَ( تَمَّ) اِلَّا  بِالْحُضُوْرِ


As no prayer is completed without dedication of heart


گرنہ موشے دزد در انبانِ ماست

If there is no mouse stealing from our sack



گندمِ اعمالِ چل سالہ کجاست


Then where is the good deeds done in fourty years?


ریزہ ریزہ صدق ہر روزہ چرا

The small good deeds of day to day,



جمع می ناید دریں انبارِ ما


Why is it not accumulating ?



                     Maulana Rum stated above that the nafs and satan are like the mice, which are eating away our collection of good deeds and then he further states that first go and remove these mice and then commence the collection of good deeds i.e. do the deeds with sincerity without allowing pride and showiness to enter. Then only your deeds will become worth belief. He further puts emphasis that go and see the Hadith and what it says that ‘the prayer (نماز) is not complete and perfect without dedication of heart (حضورِ قلب). Dedication of heart is not possible without removal of the mice of nafs and satan, thus the removal of these mice is necessary. Further he is warning on the existence of these mice that where are the effects of our collection of good deeds that we have been doing and why are not the impacts of love for Allah (عشقِ یلاہی) and malice towards the world develop, if there is no mice of nafs and satan are working. Why had it not been a big collection of good deeds, if we had started accumulating a small iota of good deeds full of truth and sincerity on daily basis.

                        Showiness, pride, lust, desire, anger etc. are the bad deeds and there are two stages of their removal. First is not to make intention of doing such things, consider such things bad if encountered and do not act according to the desire of these despite  feeling of dangers and whispers. This stage is of self authority, mandatory and whereas, feeling of dangers and whispers are not in self control, which is not harm. The second stage is the eradication of the root & base of these deeds i.e. there will be no desire & presence of these in the nafs and they become the undesirables towards Allah Ta’ala like we dislike filth. The learning of this is recommended and striving for perfection and making it a habit of doing detailed austerities and struggles in solitude. These are the two stages of achieving dedication of heart ( حضورِ قلب) in prayer (نماز), the first is that in prayer and in any other good deeds, do not  bring the thoughts of other than Allah intentionally in the heart i.e. the intention of the prayer/ worship will not be for the acceptance from any creatures etc. or its pleasure and demand for wealth etc. This dedication of heart (حضورِ قلب) is mandatory and without this, the prayer is not accepted and become the candidate of punishment for ostentation. The second stage is that the imagination of attention towards anything, except Allah Ta’ala, should not be there during prayer (نماز). There is again two stages, one is that do not bring thoughts of anything other than Allah in the heart by on your own, which is known as humility (خشوع) and it seems to be compelling condition as ascertained from ayaat and Hadith, but may not be in a mandatory one. The second stage is that thoughts of anyone other than Allah should not come even without one’s intention, which is not achieved without the annihilation (فناء) of nafs and heart, the learning of this is recommended. The ahadith mentioned in the couplet (لا صلاۃ الابحخور القلب) has not been seen in the books of hadith, but the content of this hadith is proved from the Quran and hadith and hence the saints have said it hadith perhaps be on the basis of its meaning.

Couplet 474-476


مادریں انبان گندم می کنیم

We are filling wheat in a sack



گندمِ جمع آمدہ گم می کنیم


And get lost wheat already stored


می بیند یشیم آخر ما بہوش

When we apply our mind to the problem



کایں خلل در گندمست از مکر موش


Depletion of wheat is due to mice’ mischief


موش تا انبانِ ما حُفرہ زدہ ست

Mice has bore a hole in our sack of wheat



از فنش انبارِ ما ویراں شدہ ست


Our stored wheat is getting destroyed due to its mischief



                  Maulana Rum states that our example is like the collection of wheat in a sack and later we do not find any wheat in it. We, the uncivilized people, could not think of that this damage has been done by the mice. Mice have made a hole into the sacks of wheat and the collection of wheat is getting depleted due to its mischief. Similarly, we are performing good deeds (اعمالِ حسنہ) but not finding the impacts, blessings and bounty of these deeds anywhere. The reason is that the nafs and satan are creating in us the desires and the ailments of pride, showiness etc. which is eating away the good deeds.

Couplet 750-753
