Couplet 145

عاشقی گرزیںسر و گرزاں سرست

Whether the ishq is of this kind (Carnal love) or of that kind (Real love)

عاقبت مارا بداں شہ رہبرست

At last, it will pave the way to reach to the Real King (Allah)

              In this couplet, ishq as way to the maarifah (knowledge) of Allah has been described i.e. the ishq whether it is of this kind (carnal) or of that kind (Real), as at the end, it lets us reach the Real One i.e. Allah. If it is Real ishq, then its connection with Allah is obvious and if it is carnal one, then with the help of a specific way, it lets us reached the truth, as connection with Allah will develop. When there is connection with Allah, then the revelation and inspiration of maarifah will happen and thus both kind of ishq will become the reason for the revelation of maarifah. Until complete ishq mijaazi (carnal ishq) reached to the ishq haqeeqi (Real ishq), it is not called the way for revelation of maarifah. Therefore there is a limitation put in the couplet by ‘مارا’, which means the Gnostics who know to reach ishq haqeeqi through ishq mijaazi.

 Maulana Jaami RA states –

متاب از عشق روگر چہ مجازی ست

کہ آں بہرِ حقیقت کارسازی ست

Don’t tease the ishq, even if it is ishq mijaazi

As this too paves the way for reaching the Haqeeqi.
