ابن
الوقت is a
technical term which is being used in two meanings, one in which a seeker (سالک) is subdued by the inspiration/ revelation (حال) i.e. he is overpowered by the conditions which are descending
on him. In contrary, ابو الوقت is
seeker who is dominating over the conditions (حال) i.e. whichever feeling or condition, he wants, he can impose
on himself. This means that whichever condition, he is intending or turning to,
the effects of the same will be noticeable on him like love (اُنس), desire (شوق), annihilation (فنا), ecstasy (وارد) etc. There are different other meanings of ‘Ibn-ul-waqt’ ابن الوقت, which are included in these two described meaning. Another
meaning is that a seeker who fulfill the demand of the time irrespective of the
fact whether the conditions are subdued by him or he is subdued by them. In
this couplet, this latter meaning is employed as usually soofis are called
‘Ibn-ul-waqt’. In the subsequent couplets, not being an ‘Ibn-ul-waqt’, the
negation of soofism is considered. Though employing the former meaning of the ‘Ibn-ul-waqt’does not mean the negation
of soofism. Thus the resultant is that this couplet is also in the words of
rooh, which is demanding for the showing of the secrets (اسرار) and esoteric observation (واردات) and it further says in the second part that if you are a
soofi, have to fulfill the demand of time and making commitment for the future
time is contrary to the culture of sulook.
