Couplet 242-243


زر خِرد  را والہ و شید ا کند

Gold makes intellect bewildered



خاصہ مُفلسِ راکہ خوش رسوا کند


Particularly a poor one embarrassing

زر اگرچہ عقل می آرد و لیک

Gold, though creates intellect,



مردِ عاقل باید اُو را نیک نیک


But you need to be an intelligent and pious person


                      This is in the words of Maulana Rum (little digressing from the story) that the gold (i.e. wealth) makes a man bewildered and enamored, particularly those who are poor and completely embarrass them, because of greed. Though wealth and gold increase the intelligence but not of everybody. For this to happen, a highly intelligent person is needed, who expend the money for good purposes, which makes him the flag bearer and good servant of his path, the knowledge of which does not come without knowledge of path and internal capacity.

Couplet 236-241


شاہ گفت اکنوں بگوتد بیر چیست

The king said ‘tell me what is the planning?



در چنیں غم مُوجبِ تاخیر چیست


What is to delaying in such kind of sorrow?

گفت تدبیر آں بود کاں مرد را

The doctor said that the planning is to call the person



حاضر آریم از پئے ایں درد را


Here for the cure of this pain

قاصدے مفرست کا خبارش کند

Send an emissary to bring him here



طالبِ ایں فضل و ایثارش کند


By telling him to receive bounty and present

مردِ زرگرا نجواں زاں شہرِ دُور

Bring the goldsmith from that remote city



باز رو خِلعت بِدہ او را غرُور


By offering him cash and royal dresses

تا شود محبوبِ تو خوشدل بدو

So that your beloved becomes happy seeing him



گردد آساں اینہہمہ مُشکل بدو
And all this trouble be removed due to him

چوں بہ بیند سیم وزر آں بے نوا

When that miser would see the gold and silver



بہرِ زرگر دد زخان  و ما جدا


He will leave the family for gold


The king, after listening this, asked the doctor to suggest the way to solve it as it is futile to wait. The doctor said that the way is to call the person concerned for the treatment of the ailment. You should call the goldsmith to this city through giving him the treasures and gifts by sending a messenger, who told him that the king has called you as you are selected one amongst so many artisans to carry out a particular work. So that your beloved i.e. the girl should become happy because of this and the problem be solved through this goldsmith. When that poor goldsmith will see the treasures and gifts etc., and to obtain the same, will come here leaving everything behind.

Couplet 234-235


آں حکیمِ مہرباں چوں رازیافت

The benevolent doctor, when knowing the secret



صورتِ رنجِ کنیزک باز یافت


(and) came to know the reason of her illness

بعد ازاں برخاست عزمِ شاہ کرد

He stood up and went straight to the king



شاہ    رازاں شمّہ آگاہ    کرد


And apprised him of a little about the whole thing



Knowing of the illness of handmaiden and apprising to the king

                    The doctor, after knowing the facts about the girl, went straight to the king and apprised him of a little about the whole story.

Couplet 230-233

وعدہا باشد حقیقی دلپذیر

True commitments are loved by the heart

وعدہا باشد مجازی تاسہ گیر

False commitments are troubling


وعدہ اہلِ کرم گنجِ رواں

The commitments of ‘good people’ are an open treasure

وعدہ نا اہل شد رنجِ رواں

The commitments of ‘bad people’ are like hell for heart 


وعدہا باید وفا کردن تمام

Commitments are to be fulfilled

ور نخواہی کرد باشی سرد و خام

Not fulfilling makes you cold and weak


وعدہ کردن را وفا با شد بجاں

Commitments are to be fulfilled wholeheartedly

تابہ بینی در قیامت فیضِ آں

So that you could see the benefits of that in the Hereafter



                  This is in the words of Maulana Rum that the true commitments do touch the heart and the false commitment creates perturbation in the heart, which is also narrated in a hadith – الصدق طمانینۃ و الکذب ریبۃ. The commitments of ‘good people’ (اہلِ کرم) is like the pure treasure, as pure gold and silver has value in the market. [گنجِ رواں – this is also the name of the treasures of Qaroon]. The commitments of ‘bad people’ (نااہلِ کرم) is to become the tension and stress for the soul. One has to fulfill the commitments made with complete regard and if you do not fulfill, you will be considered as weak. One has to fulfill the commitment anyhow, so that you can see the rewards of this on the day of the Hereafter.



              In وعدہا باشد الخ,  there is an indication that with the commitments of the accomplished masters, the seekers feel satisfied, whether the commitment is for learning or for blessing for the fruits of meeting (وصول). The commitments of an inexperienced and false master do not give peace to the heart as it is merely for passing and deceiving.

Couplet 224-229


تا توانی پیشِ کس مکشائے راز

Don’t reveal the secrets to even your confidant



بر کسے ایں دَر مکن زنہار باز


Don’t open this door to anyone

چونکہ اَسرارت نہان دردل شود

When your secret be remained in your heart,



آں مرادت زود تر حاصل شود


Your desire will be fulfilled very soon

گفت پیغمبر ہر آں کو سر نہفت

Prophet (SAW) said that whosoever keeps his secret



زود گردد با مرادِ خویش جُفت


He will reach to his destination swiftly

دانہ چوں اندار زمیں پنہاں شود

When the seed becomes hidden beneath the ground,



بعد ازاں سرسبزیِ بستاں شود


Then only, it becomes reason for greenery of garden

زرّ و نقرہ گر نہ بود ندے نہاں
 If gold and silver are not hidden,



پرورش کے یافتندے زیرِ کاں


How can they be remained in the mine

وعدہا   و لطفہائے آں حکیم

The commitments and care of that doctor

کرد آں رنجور را ایمن زبیم

Makes the sick contended, free from fear 



                    The doctor has suggested her an advice as above regarding not to reveal the secrets. Now in the same context, Maulana is now advising the readers of the book to not to reveal secret of your  heart to anyone, as much as possible (i.e. don’t tell what is in your heart to anyone). Don’t open the se doors and when your secret is in your heart, then your demand will be met soon. Thus Prophet SAW suggested that whosoever keeps his secret intact in his heart, his requirements will soon be fulfilled. This reference is towards the hadith – ‘keep your needs secret’. Now two examples are cited from common observation. The first is that the seeds are required to be put beneath the earth so this secrecy will become the cause for the greenery and flowering of the garden later. Secondly, if gold and silver are not kept hidden under the earth, how can they be available in the mine. The science has proved that the different things under the earth with pressure create the gold and silver and if all these part of formation of these elements are dug out of the earth, then the gold and silver will not be formed. Only being remained inside the earth, their reality has been changed and will be dug out after finish.

                     There is an indication here for the seekers that they have to maintain secret of their feelings (کیفیت) and internal revelation & inspiration (اسرار باطنی) except with the sheikh (master) and don’t reveal to everyone.

                        Now again coming back to story, Maulana tells that the commitment and favours of the doctor has made the girl confident and of without fear.

Couplet 219-223


گفت آنگہ آں حکیم با صواب

Then the rightly guided doctor said



آں کنیزک  را کہ رَستی از عذاب


To the girl that she will be free from troubles

چونکہ دانستم  کہ رنجت چیست زود
As I understand your sickness



در علاجت سحر ہا خواہم نمود


You will see magic in the treatment soon

شادباش و ایمن و فارغ کہ من

You should remain happy and contended



آں کنم با تو کہ باراں با چمن


I will do with you what rain does with garden

من غمِ تو میخورم تو عم مخور

I empathy with you, don’t be sad



بر تو من مُشفِق  ترم از صد پدر


I am caring you more than hundred fathers

ہاں و ہاں ایں راز را با کس مگوی

Beware! beware! Don’t reveal this secret to anyone,



گرچہ شاہ از تو کند بس جستجوی


Even though the king asks you




                  After knowing the details of the fact from the girl, the doctor told her that you will now be free from this problem i.e. you will be free from this issue soon. He told that now as I knew the illness of yours, I will now start such a treatment, that there will be effect like a magic. Now you will remain happy and without any stress, I will deal with you in such a manner, as the rain is doing with the garden [i.e. like the garden blossoms and becomes green after it rains].  I will now be partner of your sorrows and will treat you with such kindness even more than hundred fathers can. But beware that you must not reveal this to anyone, even if it is the king itself.

Couplet 217-218


چوں زر نجور آں حکیم ایں راز یافت

When the doctor got this secret from the sick



اصلِ آں درد و بلا را باز یافت


He got the root of the problem

گفت کوئے اُو کدام است و گذر

(The doctor) asked what is the street and location



اُو سرپل گفت و کوئے غاتفر


(She) said the street is Sarpal and location is Ghaftar




               After getting this secret from the patient, the doctor asked her the whereabouts of the goldsmith in Samarkand. She told that the road is Sarpal and the street is Ghatfar (a street in Samarkand).

Couplet 211-216


شہر شہر و خانہ خانہ قصّہ کرد

She discussed about each city and each house



نے رگش جُنبید  نے رُخ گشت زرد


Neither her pulse moved nor her face changed

نبض اُو بر حالِ خود بُد بے گزند

Her pulse was remained as it is



تا بپر سید از سمرقندِ چو قند


Until (the doctor) asked about Samarkand

آہِ سردے بر کشید اُو ما ہرو

That beautiful girl took a deep breath



آب از چشمش رواں شد ہمچو جُو


Tears broke down from eyes like a river

گفت باز رگانم آنجا آورید

Said a businessman brought me there



خواجہ زرگردراں شہرم خرید


A wealthy  goldsmith bought me there

در برِ خود داشت ششماہ و فروخت

He kept her with him for six months and then sold



چوں بگفت ایں ز آتشِ غم بر فروخت


When she said so, she started burning in pain

نبض جَست وروئے سُرخش زرد شد

Pulse moved and her red face became pale



کز سمر قندیِّ زرگر فرد شد  


Because she got separated from the goldsmith from Samarkand

During the details of different cities and conditions, expression of her face as well as her pulse showed no movement till he asked the condition of Samarkand, which is like sugar in taste (there is praise of this city as condition and expression of the girl, where it seems that the city of Samarkand will definitely be like sugar for her). By naming Samarkand, her pulse showed big movement and her face became yellow from red (though there is no redness in her face due to illness, but whatsoever was there, that too moved away). The reason for this change is that she is in separation from  a goldsmith of Samarkand, she took a deep breath and tears are flowing like river from her eyes. She told that some businessman brought her there and a goldsmith bought her and kept her for six months and then sold and became saddened of this separation.
